Many small business owners are wondering what is accounting controller position, what are the responsibilities of controller?

As an accounting controller myself for a medium size company a few years ago, I can tell you this role is challenging and exciting, with great power it comes with a greater responsibility.

As a controller, I oversaw below five areas.

1. Management of the department. As a department head, controller needs to manage the department staff and resources. Controller should understand each staff’s strength and weakness. Controller should utilize their strength to help department increase the efficiency and identify the training opportunity to help team member overcome their weakness.

2. Transactions. Controller should implement process and procedures, as well as sound internal controls to ensure transactions being processed timely and accurately.

3. Financial Reporting. Controller should review financial reporting produced by accounting department and be able to explain the financial results to upper manager in a way that non accounting person can understand.

4. Budgeting process. Controller normally oversees company budgeting process to ensure it is realistic and attainable. Budget process is important for any company to have a goal to look to reach.

5. Compliance. Controller should ensure company in compliance with government and local requirements.

Most small business can not afford to have a full-time controller. However, business owner should consider hiring a part time controller once a year to review your book and provide some suggestions on how you can manage your accounting process better.

I am here to help you, contact me if you are interested in this controller services. Looking forward to hearing from you.
